Lear was controversial because of rumours that she was born as a boy in Hong Kong. She apparently helped to promote that rumour to gain publicity, but when she became famous, it was not quite the image she wanted to project. So she posed nude for photos (also published in Bravo). If she indeed had a sex change, then her doctors deserve a Nobel Prize.
