Shakin’ Stevens 1982

8212023 Bravo cover

Shakin’ Stevens on the cover of Bravo of 2 December 1982. This week 43 years ago, Germany’s youth read about:

• ABBA’s performance on the TV programme Show Express (one of their very last)
• A new film called E.T.
• Why Yazoo are the new Laurel & Hardy (not joking; these clowns actually said that, in reference to the members’ body shapes)
• A look-back at West Side Story
Rock band BAP’s favourite bar
• What dreams mean
• Madness and Depeche Mode on tour in Germany

Bravo actors poll 1978

781123 Movie star poll

Some of Bravo’s shortlist of film actors for its annual poll in Bravo of 23 November 1978. The winner of the first three places in the make and female categories would have the OTTO statue presented by a reader. Sometimes the winner would have to travel to the USA for that purpose.

The winners will be announced in the first week of February (oh, OK then, the polls will be topped by John Travolta and Nastassja Kinski. Leif Garrett and Olivia Newton-John win best pop stars; Smokie best group. John Michael Glaser and German comedienne Ingrid Steeger win best TV stars).

Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman 1978

781123 Quatro & Norman

Suzi Quatro and Smokie’s permed singer Chris Norman on a centrespread poster in Bravo of 23 November 1978. The RAK label mates were having a hit with “Stumblin’ In”, a song whose single I bought, then hated, and lately discovered I rather like (still, it didn’t make A Life In Vinyl 1978).

The poster’s photo was taken during their performance on the Disco ’78 TV show of 27 November (their performance clearly had been pre-recorded at a previous show). Suzi is quite adorable here.

Amanda Lear 1978

This week 47 years ago, Germany’s youth read about

• US TV teen star Kristy McNichol
• The “American Indian” singer of Exile
• How Shaun Cassidy will arrive at Munich station on the train from Paris at 09:33 on 23 November
• How badly animals are exploited
•The planned comeback of ex-Bay City Roller member Pat McGlynn
