Report on the new group Dexys Midnight Runners in Bravo of 29 May 1980.
Dexys were having a hit with “Geno”. Bravo attributed singer Kevin Rowland’s paraphrased quips to the “seven ‘seamen'” (dockworkers, Bravo, dockworkers!) in the band. The magazine was rather taken with Rowland’s statement that bands like ELO, Sad Cafe and Slade are a “comedians”, and that Dexys refused to be categorised. According to Bravo, Dexys were bringing back “black soul” which “seemed to have faded from memory in England” (really?).
