Richter’s Disco show ran monthly on Saturdays, in 1974/75 in the early evening. The mix was eclectic: one or two international stars, a few German singers, here and there an up-and-coming act. It was really well produced, far superior to Britain’s To of the Pops. And any German who grew up in the 1970s will remember Richter’s catchphrases: “Hallo Freunde” (to which the audience would respond: “Hallo Ilja”), and, to announce the monthly competition winner who sat in the studio: “Licht aus (WOMM); Spot an…”
